Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, Va. - The Atlanta Braves No. 4 prospect Kolby Allard showed the Danville crowd why he was the 14th overall pick in last year's MLB Draft, hurling six shutout innings to lead the Braves to a 3-0 victory over Johnson City Thursday night.
Allard was in control from the first pitch, retiring Johnson City in order to start the game. He faced the minimum through four frames and just 20 batters through six complete innings pitched. Allard recorded six strikeouts and allowed just two hits and one walk en route to earning his first victory as a D-Brave.
For the seventh time in eight games this season, Danville was the first team to get on the board. After Marcus Mooney reached on an error to lead off the home half of the fourth inning, Jared James hit an RBI double to drive him home and give the Braves a 1-0 lead. James' RBI was his eighth of the year, the highest total for the Braves this season.
Danville extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits. Matt Hearn singled to lead off the inning, and a double from Mooney brought him home to score. Two batters later, Brett Cumberland traded places with Mooney, earning his first hit and RBI as a member of the D-Braves.
The 3-0 lead was more than enough for the Braves bullpen. Jacob Webb, Cameron Stanton, and Brandon White each pitched one inning in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively, to preserve the shutout and the win.
The Braves victory sets up a rubber match in tomorrow's season finale against the Cardinals. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m., and there will be a pre-game concert from Spencer Key as part of the Danville Braves Community Concert Series presented by Danville Toyota. Friday night is also the first Military Appreciation Night of the season, presented by Angus Heating and Air and Blue Ridge Beverage. All active and retire military members can receive a free ticket with a valid ID.
