January 26, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Forward Akim Aliu was reassigned by the Atlanta Thrashers from AHL Chicago to Gwinnett.
The 21-year old forward had four goals and five assists in 43 games with the Wolves this season. Last year Aliu split his rookie season between Rockford (AHL) and Toledo (ECHL) before he was traded to the Thrashers from the Chicago Blackhawks in late June.
In Rockford Aliu tallied 11 goals and six assists in 48 games, before he finished the campaign with the Toledo Walleye and averaged more than a point per game (five goals, nine assists in 13 games). He also had a goal and an assist in two playoff games for Toledo.
The Okene, Nigeria native was a second round choice, #56 overall by the Blackhawks in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to his rookie season he amassed totals of 76 goals, 91 assists, 167 points, and 407 penalty minutes in 205 games through four-plus seasons in the OHL.
Aliu was traded to the Thrashers by Blackhawks on June 24, 2010 in the deal that sent Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, Brent Sopel and Aliu to Atlanta in exchange for Marty Reasoner, Jeremy Morin, Joey Crabb, a 1st and a 2nd round selection in 2010.
The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
