Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Lancaster, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino coasted for eight innings leading the Lancaster JetHawks 6-0 but had to hang on by their fingernails for a 6-5 victory in which CF Jonah Todd's diving catch of out number 27 came with the tying run motoring home. The 66ers got another magnificent outing from righty Jason Alexander (2-2) who tossed seven shutout frames on Tuesday. This outing was on the heels of seven no-hit frames in his last appearance earning him Cal League Pitcher of the Week honors. In the Windsor, CA native's last 14 innings he's allowed no-runs, three hits, four walks and struck out ten.
Inland Empire (15-17) took a 3-0 lead in the first when Jared Walsh's fly ball to right in heavy winds cleared the right field wall for a two-run homer, his sixth of the season. After Kevin William's infield single, Todd drilled a RBI triple off Lancaster righty Matt Dennis (2-5). The 66ers made it 5-0 in the fifth on a sac fly by Walsh and RBI double by Williams. After Alexander's great performance, righty Daniel Procopio locked down the eighth in order against Lancaster (16-16) by striking out the side. The Sixers got, what appeared to be an innocuous run in the ninth when Brandon Sandoval hustled from first to score on Julian Leon's single to left giving the Sixers a 6-0 advantage. That's when the roof nearly caved in. Carlos Salazar came out of the pen for IE and gave up a double to Colton Welker and then back-to-back homers to Roberto Ramos (10th) and Vince Fernandez (3rd) making it 6-3. Brad Serven then doubled and Willie Abreu walked. Sean Isaac (SV, 2) came in and got a pair of fly-outs but and infield single brought in a run and a wild pitch yet another making it 6-5 with a runner at second. Carlos Herrera, who was only in the game after starting SS Alan Trejo was ejected after being punched out to end the eighth, came up and lined an offering to center. Todd charged the sinking liner and laid out for a diving catch to end the game.
The series continues at Lancaster on Wednesday at 6:35 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
