New York City FC News Release
New York City Football Club defender Alexander Callens is in action for Peru on Monday as they face off against Australia with a place in the 2022 World Cup on the line.
The 30-year-old made his debut for Los Incas in April 2013 during a friendly against Mexico. After several years away from the national team Callens returned to the fold in 2018 during a friendly against the United States Men's National Team.
Last year proved to be a memorable one for Callens internationally. He was named as part of Peru's Copa America squad and played five of their seven matches as they finished the tournament in fourth place.
He carried that form with him into CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers - participating in all but one of Peru's matches.
In the end, Callens and his teammates finished fifth in South American qualifying. That set up a meeting with Australia in Qatar on Monday, June 13, with the winner advancing to the World Cup later this year.
If successful, it will be only the second time in Peru's history that they have qualified for consecutive World Cups.
Everyone at the Club would like to wish Alex good luck as he attempts to help secure his country's place in the tournament this winter.
