
Alex Gordon Optioned to Omaha

OMAHA, NE - Kansas City third baseman Alex Gordon was optioned today to Omaha. The former University of Nebraska star is expected to join the Triple-A club for Wednesday night's game at Tacoma. It will mark the first time that the Lincoln, Nebraska native has officially been part of Omaha's roster, although he did play in one rehab assignment game with the O-Royals last month as he recovered from hip surgery. Kansas City made the move to create roster space for reliever Kyle Farnsworth, who was activated from the disabled list.
Gordon has only played in 29 games with Kansas City this season, hitting .198 with three home runs and eleven RBI. He went 2-for-21 (.095) with one homer and three RBI in seven contests before undergoing surgery on April 17th to repair torn cartilage in his right hip. Gordon began a rehab assignment on June 26th with the Surprise Royals of the rookie-level Arizona League, before joining Omaha for just one rehab game on July 3rd.
That night, playing in an Omaha uniform for the first time in his career in front of 23,532 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium, Gordon was 1-for-3 with a single and a run scored and was intentionally walked twice by New Orleans pitchers. The game, which was suspended by rain tied at 2-2 after ten innings, will be completed on August 27th at 5:30 p.m. when the Royals host the Zephyrs at Rosenblatt.
Following the July 3rd contest, Gordon continued his rehab assignment with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, hitting .367 (11-for-30) with two home runs and ten RBI in eight games. He was activated off the disabled list by Kansas City on July 17th. In 22 games with the parent Royals since returning from the D.L., Gordon is batting Gordon is batting .227 (17-for-75) with two home runs and eight RBI.
Gordon was the Royals' first-round pick (second overall) in the 2005 draft out of the University of Nebraska. As a junior in 2005, Gordon swept the collegiate baseball awards - winning the Golden Spikes Award, the Dick Howser Award, the Brooks Wallace Award and the ABCA Rawlings Player of the Year - and led the Huskers to their third College World Series appearance.
In his first professional season in 2006, he starred at Double-A Wichita, batting .325 with 29 home runs, 101 RBI and a Texas League-leading 111 runs. He earned both the Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year and the J.G. Taylor Spink Award as the Topps/Minor League Player of the Year. That performance vaulted Gordon over Triple-A Omaha to the big leagues in 2007.
