Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - Victor Alcantara (7-12) turned in his best outing of the season for the Inland Empire 66ers on Friday night against a team he's baffled all year in the Stockton Ports. Alcantara tossed a season-high eight innings and matched a season-best with nine strikeouts as the 66ers snapped a four-game losing streak and defeated the Ports by a final of 5-1.

Ports starter Dylan Covey (7-9) suffered one bad inning and it was his first of the night. Covey gave up a leadoff single to Bo Way, who advanced to third on back-to-back passed balls. Way scored on an ensuing groundout by Tyler Palmer to give the 66ers a 1-0 lead. Covey then proceeded to give up three straight singles, the third being an RBI single by Andrew Daniel to run the 66ers lead to 2-0.

Covey went on to retire 17 of his next 19 batters to complete his outing but still suffered the loss after allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven and not walking a batter over six innings pitched.

Alcantara, meanwhile, was perfect through three innings. He gave up a leadoff single to Brett Vertigan in the fourth and a leadoff single to John Nogowski in the fifth, but in both innings retired the next three batters.

Stockton's lone run came in the sixth due to 66ers fielding error. Brandon Cogswell led off with a single and stole second. With one out, Melvin Mercedes hit a ground ball to first that got through the legs of first baseman Brandon Bayardi, allowing Mercedes to score and cutting the 66ers lead to 2-1.

Inland Empire got the run back plus another in the ensuing half-inning. Trevor Bayless came on in relief and gave up a leadoff single to Roberto Baldoquin, followed by a two-run homer to Wade Wass, the first of two for Wass on the night to make it a 4-1 contest. Those were the only runs allowed by Bayless in his lone inning of relief.

Carlos Navas entered to pitch the eighth and would pitch the final two innings, allowing a one-out solo homer to Wass in the ninth to make it a 5-1 contest. Wass went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI.

Alcantara finished strong by setting the side down in order in the eighth, his final inning of work. The right-hander allowed just an unearned run on three hits while walking one and striking out nine.

Eduardo Paredes pitched around a two-out error in the ninth to close out the ballgame for the 66ers.

The Ports and 66ers play the middle game of their three-game set on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Left-hander Matt Stalcup (2-5, 3.39 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Inland Empire right-hander Ryan Etsell (7-3, 4.35 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
