No Wind in Adelanto, Blaze Lose 2-1
August 29, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
On a rare windless night in the High Desert, the host Mavericks and Bakersfield Blaze each scored their only runs of the game in the 2nd inning, and the Blaze had one too few, suffering a series-opening 2-1 loss on Friday night.
The pitching on both sides was superb.
David Ledbetter (W, 3-9), who had been tattooed by Bakersfield in his prior matchup with the Blaze, rebounded well on Friday night. After a scoreless 1st, Ledbetter allowed his only run of the night over 6.0 innings in the 2nd. Rayder Ascanio, who ended up smacking three hits in the ballgame, began the 2nd with a double, and Justin Seager singled him home for Bakersfield's only tally.
In the home half of the inning, Dan Altavilla (L, 6-12) was forced to work harder than usual, and with two runners on and two outs Josh Altmann hit a drive towards the gap in rightcenter. Tyler O'Neill made a diving try but the ball took off on him and ran to the wall, scoring two.
Altavilla was lifted after just two innings due to pitch count, but the Blaze bullpen was stellar. Will Mathis pitched 4.0 scoreless frames, and Ramon Morla and Rafael Pineda followed with a spotless frame apiece.
On this low-scoring night, though, the two Mavs runs would suffice. Bakersfield outhit High Desert 8-to-7, but the Mavs pitchers scattered the hits, and after Felix Carvallo worked 2.1 innings of relief, John Fasola (S, 4) got the final two outs with the tying run at second base.
The loss continues what has been a very tough match-up this season with the Mavs, but the Blaze continue to show strong efforts in August, a month that has seen the team win almost two thirds of their games.
The series continues Saturday in Adelanto with another 7:05pm contest. Tyler Pike takes the hill for the Blaze, and fans can listen to the broadcast online at BakersfieldBlaze.com or via the TuneIn Radio app. Dan Besbris has the call.
