Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Matt Padgett homered twice but it wasn't enough to rally the Albuquerque Isotopes (53-45) in a 9-6 defeat to the Iowa Cubs (46-49) Wednesday night at Principal Park. Padgett led off the second inning with a blast to right field and hit a two-run shot in a four-run fifth to lead a âTopes' comeback that fell short.
Iowa scored early and often with two runs in the first, one in each of the next two frames, and four in the fourth to chase Albuquerque starter Frank Castillo (7-7). But the Isotopes were nearly as effective against Castillo's counterpart Rich Hill, who allowed six runs in 4.1 innings.
Padgett's solo shot started the scoring in what had all the makings of a big inning in the second. Mike Colangelo followed Padgett with a single and moved to second base on a base hit by Wilson Delgado. A walk to Ryan Jorgensen loaded the bases for Castillo, who tied the game at 2-all with a ground ball to third. But further damage was averted when Eric Reed grounded out and Josh Wilson struck out the end the inning.
Albuquerque cut into a sizable 8-2 Iowa lead with four runs in the fifth - highlighted by Padgett's second home run of the contest and 16th on the season - but failed to get any closer against a host of Iowa relievers led by Bobby Brownlie (5-4) and Jermaine Van Buren, who worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his 17th save of 2005.
The âTopes left eight runners on base for the game. Colangelo finished with three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Joe Dillon had a pair of knocks and two RBIs.
Albuquerque will conclude its four-game set in Des Moines Thursday night at 6:05 with left-hander Donovan Osborne (1-0, 4.91) taking on Iowa left-hander John Koronka (7-7, 4.24). The first-place Isotopes will return home on July 26 for an eight-game homestand that will be kicked off by an Orbit Bobblehead giveaway, one of the most highly anticipated Isotopes promotions all season courtesy of Coca-Cola.
Other highlights include baseball giveaways on July 27 courtesy of CASA Automotive, free Louisville Slugger replica bats for the kids courtesy of Comcast, and the triumphant return of Myron Noodleman, complete with special boobleheads on July 30 presented by ABC Seamless. Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
