Akron Snaps Erie's Win Streak

The Akron Aeros snapped the SeaWolves seven-game winning streak on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park by a final of 7-6. The loss drops the ‘Wolves to 3.5 games behind Akron in the Southern Division standings.

The Aeros scored first in the top of the third inning. Asdrubal Cabrera singled with two outs in the inning and stole second for his 20th steal of the season. Jordan Brown followed with his second hit of the game, an RBI double, giving Akron a 1-0 lead.

Akron added to the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Rodney Choy Foo with two down in the inning, slammed his fifth home run of the season for a 2-0 lead. An error with allowed Wyatt Toregas to reach and a walk by Argenis Reyes put two aboard. Trevor Crowe singled to left scoring Toregas for a 3-0 lead. Cabrera doubled home a pair for a 5-0 Aeros advantage.

Erie got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Jackson Melian tripled off the glove of a leaping Crowe in centerfield. Melian scored on a Jeff Larish ground out to put the ‘Wolves on the board, making it 5-1 Akron.

The ‘Wolves clawed back in the bottom of the fifth. Nick McIntyre led off the inning with a base hit brining Nick Trzesniak to the plate. Trzesniak, in only his second start of the season for Erie, smashed a two-run home run, his first, over the wall in left, making it 5-3 Akron. Matt Joyce then singled with one out and Melian doubled with two outs to put runners on second and third. Larish drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Andres Torres. Torres drew a bases loaded walk, bringing Erie to within a run at 5-4.

The Aeros went back ahead by a pair in the top of the sixth. Crowe singled through the right side with two outs and then stole second base. Crowe scored on Cabrera's third hit of the game, putting Akron up 6-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, the SeaWolves would tie it up for the first time in the game. Trzesniak singled with one out and Thomas drew his third walk of the game to put the tying runs on base. With two outs, Mike Hollimon singled home Trzesniak and Melian connected on his third hit of the game, singling home Thomas, nodding the game at 6-6.

Akron would regain the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Michael Aubrey singled with one out and Chris Gimenez double to put two runners in scoring position against Danny Zell (1-5). Choy Foo came to the plate and knocked home Aubrey for a 7-6 Aeros lead.

Akron would go on to win by a count of 7-6 as Jim Ed Warden (3-0) and Randy Newsom (S-11) shut down the ‘Wolves over the final three innings of the game

Starter Andrew Kown went 5.2 innings for the ‘Wolves allowing six runs, three earned, on 10 hits. He walked one, hit one and struck out three.
