Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Michael Devaney tossed six shutout innings and was backed by two homers, helping the Binghamton Mets to a 4-1 win over the Connecticut Defenders at Dodd Stadium Saturday. The victory snaps Binghamton's three-game losing streak.

The B-Mets (33-45) used a two-out rally to take a first-inning lead. After Connecticut starter Nick Pereira retired the inning's first two hitters, Mark Kiger worked out a walk before Mike Carp singled him to third. Brett Harper followed with a single to left that scored Kiger for a 1-0 B-Mets lead.

Pereira (3-8) retired nine of the next 10 before Caleb Stewart hit a solo homer to center for Binghamton's second run. Stewart picked up his third hit of the game in the seventh, leading off with a single, before Jose Coronado took a Pereira offering over the rightfield fence for a two-run homer to make it 4-0.

Connecticut (32-48) was unable to solve Devaney (3-6), who retired 13 of the first 14 he faced. The Defenders had just two runners in scoring position against Devaney, who scattered three hits and didn't walk a batter, striking out four.

Robert Paulk followed with three innings of work for his second save in three chances, allowing only Tyler Von Schell's leadoff homer in the ninth.

Sunday, the B-Mets play the second game of their four-game set against the Connecticut Defenders. Bobby Parnell (0-2, 3.13) will start for the B-Mets against Dave McKae (3-0, 1.29) of Connecticut. Game time is 2:05 from Dodd Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 1:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Notes: Coronado's last home run came on 7/21/2005 when he was playing for Rookie Kingsport. He has hit five homers in his career...Devaney won for the first time in six starts...Brett Harper made his first career start in leftfield, catching two fly balls.
