LOOKING AHEAD:
All eyes will be on Van Andel Arena on Friday night (7:30 ET, 5:30 MT), as Grand Rapids hosts Utah. Curtis Joseph is expected to make his AHL debut in net for the Griffins on a conditioning loan from Detroit, his first appearance of the 2003-04 season. The two-time NHL All-Star and 2002 Olympic gold medalist will be helped by a stingy Griffins defense that has allowed the fewest goals in the AHL each of the last two years, bolstered this year by Red Wings' 2000 first-round draft pick Niklas Kronwall. Utah owns a 12-9-1 edge over Grand Rapids since the teams joined the AHL in 2001.
The Toyota Center opens its doors to the AHL on Friday (7:00 CT, 8:00 ET) as the Houston Aeros celebrate their 2003 Calder Cup championship in their home opener. The Aeros split their first two meetings of the year â road contests last weekend in Milwaukee and Grand Rapids â and are on home ice for the first time since Game 5 of last year's finals. Rickard Wallin leads Houston with three points on the year, while fellow returnees Marc Cavosie, Stephane Veilleux and Kyle Wanvig have tallied a goal and an assist apiece.
Lowell puts its perfect record to the test on Friday (7:00 ET) when Manchester pays a visit to the Tsongas Arena. The Lock Monsters, at 4-0-0-0 the last unbeaten and untied team in the AHL, lost 10 of 12 to their rivals a year ago, but already have a 4-2 win over the Monarchs in 2003-04. Ryan Bayda, the reigning Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week who has been in on half of Lowell's goals this year, is on recall to Carolina, while Manchester is without point-a-game forward Steve Kelly, who begins a four-game AHL suspension this weekend.
Binghamton puts its 5-1-0-0 record to the test this weekend, hosting 4-0-1-0 Hershey on Friday (7:05 ET) before visiting 4-0-1-0 Syracuse on Saturday (7:30 ET). The Senators saw their season-opening five-game winning streak end in a 1-0 loss to Bridgeport on Oct. 19, but the Sens have still outscored their opponents by a 2-to-1 margin on the year. The Bears' Peter Budaj and the Crunch's tandem of Pascal Leclaire and Karl Goehring will provide solid competition for Binghamton's 2003 All-Rookie netminder Ray Emery (1.39, .951).
