LOOKING AHEAD:
Hershey plays a two-game set in St. John's Wednesday and Thursday (7:35 NT, 6:05 ET), marking the home opener for the Maple Leafs at Mile One Stadium and the teams' first meetings since Mar. 25, 2001. Charlie Stephens, Shane Willis and Steve Brule had a goal and an assist each in Hershey's only previous action this year, a 4-4 tie in Syracuse on Saturday, while the Leafs split a pair of games in Winnipeg to start their 13th AHL season. Both clubs are led by rookie head coaches, with Paul Fixter guiding the Bears and Doug Shedden leading the Leafs. St. John's has won four straight home games versus Hershey since a 3-1 Bears win on Nov. 13, 1996.
When Milwaukee hosts Manitoba on Wednesday (7:00 CT), the Admirals should have defenseman Curtis Murphy and forward Ben Simon in the lineup for the first time; both players missed Friday's season-opening win over Toronto to attend the funeral of former teammate Dan Snyder. Murphy had not missed a game since Apr. 3, 2001, playing 220 straight regular-season and playoff games in the AHL, NHL and IHL. The youngest player in the AHL this season, 19-year-old Moose rookie Ryan Kesler, is coming off a four-point effort in a Monday afternoon victory over St. John's.
Cincinnati and San Antonio hit the SBC Center ice on Thursday (7:00 CT, 8:00 ET) in a battle of unbeatens in the West Division. The Rampage opened their second season with a home-and-home sweep of Utah last weekend, led by Jaroslav Bednar, Denis Shvidki, Eric Beaudoin and Michel Periard with three points each. The Mighty Ducks won their first outing of 2003-04, a 3-0 shutout of Toronto on Saturday behind Ilya Bryzgalov's 28 saves. Rookie Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau had a goal and an assist in his pro debut for Cincinnati.
