Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- Eric Aguilera has led the Inland Empire offensively all season long, but had never had a night like this. The 66ers first baseman was six-for-six in the Sixers' 17-3 waxing of the Lake Elsinore Storm at San Manuel Stadium on Monday. The 66ers set season-highs in runs scored on a season-best 24 hits. The hit total was tops in the Cal League this year.
Inland Empire (52-53, 17-18) scored a run in the first and then the onslaught began. The 66ers scored four runs in the second and third innings, three more in the fifth and led 13-0 before the Storm even got on the board in the top of the seventh inning.
Jeremy Rhoades tossed five shutout innings against Lake Elsinore (39-69, 8-29) to earn the win for the 66ers. The Illinois State University product improved to 3-1 with his two-hit, five-strikeout performance. Tyler Carpenter (3IP, 5H, 3ER, 0BB, 5Ks) and Garrett Nuss (1IP, 0H, 0R) finished off the Storm. Storm starter Ernesto Montas took the loss; he allowed nine runs on 11 hits in 2.2 IP.
The 66ers offense rolled all night long. Caleb Adams had a terrific night for Inland Empire. The Lafayette, LA native had his first four-hit game as a member of the 66ers and raised his batting average 35 points in an evening to .299. Inland Empire got three-hit games from Bo Way, Mike Fish, Tyler Palmer and Jake Yacinich. Way knocked in three runs, while Fish and Yacinich had a pair of RBI. Yacinich had two doubles in the game while Kody Eaves tagged a two-run triple, his eighth three-bagger of the campaign.
The star of the game Aguilera, who like winning pitcher Jeremy Rhoades attended Illinois State. The Cary, IL native had five singles and a double in six plate appearances with four RBI. Aguilera raised his batting average from an already robust .319 to .330, third-best among qualified Cal League batters and tops among players still in the circuit. Aguilera has now hit safely in eight consecutive plate appearances, two off the Cal League record of 10. He was one hit shy of tying the single game record of seven hits on Monday. The six hits was the most by an Inland Empire slugger since last August 30th when Sherman Johnson tagged five hits in six at-bats.
The series continues Tuesday at 7:05 pm. Angels' icon Jered Weaver will start on a MLB rehab assignment for the 66ers. The game can be heard live at 66ers.com.
