Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Christian Powell struggled in an abbreviated high-A debut, and the JetHawks were unable to recover from an early deficit, falling 9-5 to the Bakersfield Blaze on Monday night at The Hangar.
Over just 2.1 innings of work, Powell (0-1) surrendered seven runs on nine hits, taking the loss for the JetHawks (53-54).
Alex Bregman went 3-for-5 with a triple in his first multi-hit game for Lancaster. Ronnie Mitchell and Marc Wik added two hits each.
Tyler O'Neill gave the Blaze (40-67) an early lead with a solo homer in the top of the first inning. The JetHawks tied the score in the bottom half as James Ramsay walked, reached third on a Bregman single and scored on a passed ball.
But Bakersfield took the lead for good in the second. Kyle Petty led off with a triple and scored on a groundout, and Tim Lopes later hit a go-ahead RBI-single. In the third, Chantz Mack hit a two-run homer off Powell, who would depart with two runners on and one out. Troy Scribner entered in relief and yielded a RBI-single to Carlton Tanabe, who became caught in a rundown between first and second, allowing trailing runner Jay Baum to score the fourth run of the inning.
Scribner, however, went on to strike out five and would not allow a baserunner through the next two innings.
Chase McDonald led off the fourth inning with a solo homer to left-center, but Lancaster's only other runs would come in the sixth on a Wik two-run double off Dan Altavilla (5-9) and an Edwin Medina RBI-double against reliever Aaron Brooks.
The Blaze got a RBI-single from Austin Wilson and a Petty RBI-triple in the seventh against tandem starter Keegan Yuhl. Over a total of four innings, Yuhl struck out four and did not walk a batter.
The JetHawks went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Lancaster's fifth straight defeat dropped the club below .500 for the first time since a 9-6 loss to Inland Empire on May 23.
The series continues on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The JetHawks will send Franics Martes (0-1, 7.27) to the mound against Bakersfield's Tyler Pike (2-4, 3.61). The JetHawks will be hosting Two-For-Tuesday, as fans can receive 2-for-1 grandstand tickets by presenting an empty 20-oz. Coca-Cola product at the box office.
