 Arena Football League (1987-2008)

AFL Weekly Update

June 27, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

NEW YORK - The Mitsubishi Motors Drive to ArenaBowl XXI New Orleans kicks off with four games as the search for this year's ArenaBowl Champion begins in Philadelphia as the Orlando Predators make their second trip to the Wachovia Center in seven days as the Philadelphia Soul hosts its first playoff game in franchise history on Russell Athletic ESPN Arena Football Friday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2, ESPN360.com, SIRIUS RADIO Channel 123).

Philadelphia QB TONY GRAZIANI completed 25-of-45 passes for 262 yards with six touchdowns through the air and two on the ground as the Soul outscored the Predators 28-14 in the second half on its way to a 63-49 victory on Thursday.

This matchup marks the first time since 2001 that two teams will play each other in Week 17 and then during the first-round of the playoffs. That matchup saw Chicago defeat Orlando first at home (55-41) and then in Orlando (41-26) five days later.

Orlando defeated Philadelphia in the Divisional Round of the 2006 playoffs as Predators OL/DL HENRY TAYLOR sacked Graziani on the Orlando one-yard line, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Philadelphia FB/LB WES OURS at the Predators seven-yard line as time expired.

Taylor's sack and forced fumble secured Orlando's 31-27 victory, and spoiled Philadelphia's bid to advance to the Conference Championship Game in the team's inaugural playoff run.

Led by QB SHANE STAFFORD, the Predators look to use his postseason experience to lead them to a victory and end their two-game slide in the process. However, it will be a tough task as Philadelphia has won four of its last six games.

The Tampa Bay Storm return to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus as they host the Columbus Destroyers on Russell Athletic ESPN Arena Football Saturday, June 30, at 12 p.m. ET (ESPN2, ESPN360.com, SIRIUS RADIO Channel 123).

With the emergence of All-Rookie Team selection QB BRETT DIETZ, the Storm have won nine of its last 11 games on a momentum swing that mirrors the 2006 Chicago Rush's run to become ArenaBowl XX Champions.

Dietz made his AFL debut in the third quarter of Tampa's 34-32 victory over Columbus in Week 9 where he completed 13-of-25 passes for 170 yards with two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown to outscore the Destroyers 24-19 in the second half.

Columbus has lost five of its last six games and looks to use its Week 17 victory over New York to propel them deep into the playoffs in their first appearance since relocating from Buffalo following the 2003 season.

The Kansas City Brigade hosts its first postseason game as they welcome Mitsubishi Motors Central Division rival Colorado on Russell Athletic ESPN Arena Football Saturday, June 30, at 3 p.m. ET (ESPN2, ESPN360.com, SIRIUS RADIO Channel 123).

Kansas City enters the Wild Card game with a higher seed than the Crush, but Colorado swept the season series in 2007, by a combined seven points, accounting for one-third of the Brigade's losses.

Colorado withstood last-minute touchdown passes from Kansas City QB RAYMOND PHILYAW in each contest, successfully running out the clock and securing the 44-40 and 45-42 victories.

Led by QB JOHN DUTTON and WR DAMIAN HARRELL, Colorado looks to end its four-game slide and advance to the Divisional Round of the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

Dutton has faired well against the Brigade, completing 74-of-123 passes for 784 yards with 16 touchdowns and zero interceptions in three career matchups.

This game also features two of the AFL's all-time greats as two-time Offensive Player of the Year Harrell faces three-time ADT Defensive Player of the Year DB KENNY MCENTYRE.

The two have played evenly this season with Harrell registering eight catches for 88 yards and five touchdowns while McEntyre has notched eight-and-a-half tackles with four passes defensed.

Kansas City has won six of its last eight games coming into the playoffs and looks to use the friendly confines of Kemper Arena to secure the team's first postseason victory.

The Wild Card round concludes in Los Angeles as the Avengers welcome the Utah Blaze to the Staples Center on Russell Athletic ESPN Arena Football Monday, July 2, at 10 p.m. ET (ESPN2, ESPN360.com, SIRIUS RADIO Channel 123). This game marks the first time in AFL history that two pairs of teams who met in their season finales face each other in the first round of the playoffs.

Utah QB JOE GERMAINE completed 20-of-35 passes for 224 yards and five touchdowns on his way to an AFL single-season record 5,005 passing yards as the Blaze outscored the Avengers 17-13 in the second half and defeated Los Angeles, 47-37, on Saturday.

Germaine and WR SIAHA BURLEY will try to pick up where they left off as Burley notched 11 receptions for 133 yards and three touchdowns on his way to becoming the first player in AFL history to amass more than 2,000 receiving yards in a season.

Utah's defense looks to continue its stifling of QB SONNY CUMBIE, which forced him to throw a season-high four interceptions resulting in 14 of the Blaze's total 47 points.

Led by Cumbie and recently-activated WR KEVIN INGRAM, the Avengers look to bounce back from its Week 17 loss and defeat the Blaze for the first time in team history while also securing the franchise's first playoff victory.

To aid local TV stations, the Arena Football League will produce 15-minute satellite feeds containing playoff highlights throughout the postseason. A feed will run every day a game is played. The Wild Card and Divisional Rounds will both have three separate feeds. The Wild Card Round times are: June 29, 10:30 p.m. ET, June 30, 8 p.m. ET, and July 3, 1:30 a.m. ET (NOTE: July 2, 10:30 p.m. PT). The feed coordinates are: Galaxy 26, Transponder 21 (C-Band), Downlink Frequency: 4120 Vertical, Audio: 6.2/6.8.
