AFL I Arena Football League (1987-2008)

AFL Weekly Notes

Published on June 20, 2007 under Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

NEW YORK - Four teams. Two spots. One weekend. The Mitsubishi Motors Drive to ArenaBowl XXI New Orleans has space for only two more teams and Week 17 finds four teams vying for them.

The Mitsubishi Motors Central Division crown comes down to a rematch of Week 1 that saw the Kansas City Brigade (10-5) pull off a 54-41 victory over the defending ArenaBowl XX Champion Chicago Rush (11-4) at Kemper Arena. The winner of this Saturday's game captures the Central Division title and a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Brigade QB RAYMOND PHILYAW (4,170 YDs, 82 TDs) completed 23-of-33 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns in the air, while rushing for two touchdowns in his first game against his former team. Kansas City scored a team-record six rushing touchdowns in the win.

The Rush, led by WR BOBBY SIPPIO (116 REC, 1,649 YDs, 50 TDs), have won three of its last four and looks to capture its third Central Division title (2002, 2004) with the win. A victory and a San Jose loss would give Chicago home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. With two touchdowns on Saturday, Sippio can become the second player in AFL history to record 52 touchdowns in a season.

Kansas City has won four of its last seven games and looks to continue its winning ways heading into the playoffs.

The Colorado Crush (8-7) host the Dallas Desperados (14-1) on the final day of the regular season on Russell Athletic ESPN Arena Football Monday, June 25, at 10 p.m. ET (ESPN2 & ESPN360.com).

Led by QB JOHN DUTTON (4,036 YDs, 80 TDs) and WR DAMIAN HARRELL (126 REC, 1,440 YDs, 44 TDs), the Crush look to end their three-game slide and enter the playoffs with a victory.

The last time Colorado and Dallas faced each other Dutton completed 23-of-41 passes for 338 yards with eight touchdowns and connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass to WR/LB ANDY MCCULLOUGH with one minute remaining to defeat the Desperados, 66-58, in 2005.

Dallas QB CLINT DOLEZEL (4,321 YDs, 99 TDs) can become the first player in professional football history to record consecutive 100 touchdown seasons as the Desperados look to secure the National Conference's best record and home-field advantage for the second consecutive season.

It's win and you're in at Nassau Coliseum as the New York Dragons (5-10) welcome the Columbus Destroyers (6-9) on Saturday, June 23 at 7 p.m. ET (AFL NET).

Columbus QB MATT NAGY completed 18-of-28 passes for 251 yards and five touchdowns as the Destroyers defeated the Dragons, 51-42, at Nationwide Arena in Week 9.

Led by Nagy (3,301 YDs, 68 TDs) and WR DAMIEN GROCE (107 REC, 1,246 YDs), Columbus looks to bounce back from their 56-53 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday and enter the playoffs for the third time in franchise history, and first since relocating from Buffalo after the 2003 season with a victory.

New York rests its fate with QB ROHAN DAVEY (2,305 YDs, 40 TDs), who must defeat the Destroyers by nine-or-more points, or win and hope New Orleans defeats Georgia on Sunday.

This week's games also include: Orlando at Philadelphia on Thursday (CSS - Live, Bright House - Live, Catch 47 - Live, CSN Philadelphia - Live); Austin at Tampa Bay on Saturday (FSN Southwest - Live, SUN Sports - Live); Grand Rapids at Nashville on Saturday (AFL NET); Utah at Los Angeles on Saturday (FSN Utah - Live, FSN Prime Ticket - Live, SIRIUS Radio Channel 126); New Orleans at Georgia on Sunday (CST New Orleans - Live); and San Jose at Las Vegas on Monday (FSN Bay Area - Live).
