On the Right Foot...The Aeros got the start they were looking for last night, taking game one of this best-of-five Southern Division Championship Series with the Reading Phillies 9-4 in front of 2,646 fans at Canal Park. Starter Josh Tomlin allowed a pair of runs (one earned) in the second inning before locking in and retiring the final 17 batters he faced on the night. The Akron offense awoke with two down in the third as CF Jose Constanza kept the inning alive with a single and scored from first on an RBI double from 2B Josh Rodriguez. The Aeros then took the lead for good with a three-run double from LF Jerad Head with two down in the fourth, and RF John Drennen added a two-run shot to dead center in the sixth. RHP Steven Wright suffered through a rare off night out of the bullpen, allowing two runs in the top of the eighth as the Phillies got the tying run to the plate. Closer Josh Judy came on and got the dangerous Michael Taylor on a deep fly to center to end the inning however, and Akron tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to ice the game.
Tomcat...Tomlin was simply tremendous in his biggest start of the season last night, dominating Reading after the two-run hiccup in the top of the second. The native of Whitehouse, TX surrendered just three hits in a season-high tying seven innings, while not walking a soul and striking out eight. Tomlin, who led the Eastern League with 14 wins during the regular season, has now allowed just three earned runs in his last three starts dating to August 27th at Bowie. He has compiled a 1.42 ERA over those three starts, and has given up just eight hits and three walks while recording 24 strikeouts in his last 19.0 IP.
Bikini Bottom...Akron pounded out nine runs and a dozen hits in support of Tomlin last night, but it was the bottom third of the order that did the majority of the damage. SS Carlos Rivero, RF John Drennen and LF Jerad Head went a combined 4-10 with a double, a homer, three runs scored and seven RBI last night. Head had the biggest blow with the bases-clearing double in the fourth, while Drennen homered for the fourth straight game in the sixth to tie a franchise record (Kevin Kouzmanoff in 2006 and Carlos Santana earlier this year are the only other players to accomplish the feat). Rivero then got into the act in the eighth, lacing an RBI double to right-center to give the Aeros some breathing room.
Elsewhere...Connecticut's Ben Snyder (the younger brother of former Akron outfielder Brad Snyder) worked eight strong innings as the Defenders defeated New Britain 6-2 in game one of the NDCS. Snyder only got the start because Madison Bumgarner was promoted to San Francisco...The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are into the NYPL finals thanks to last night's 3-1 win over Brooklyn. The Scrappers await the winner of tonight's game between Staten Island and Lowell.
