Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, VA - Today, Norfolk Admirals General Manager Al MacIsaac announced that the Admirals have signed defenseman Mitch Maunu (pronounced "MAH-noo") to an AHL Standard Player's Contract.

Maunu, 20, a 6'2" 210-pound defenseman from Thunder Bay, Ontario, was drafted by the Admirals' NHL parent club, the Chicago Blackhawks, in the fourth round (120th overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He will turn pro this season after finishing his junior career with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League last spring.

"Mitch Maunu was one of the top defensemen in the Ontario Hockey League last year," said MacIsaac. "He plays a safe, conservative and very reliable style of hockey. I think he'll make a very solid pro player."

In 279 regular season and post-season games with the Spitfires over four seasons, Maunu scored 33 goals and added 79 assists for 112 points and 326 PIM. He was a captain in his last two seasons with the club and led the Spitfires in scoring by defensemen in 2005-06 with 36 points (9 goals and 27 assists) in 58 regular season games.

The Admirals open their seventh season of AHL hockey in Philadelphia on October 6 before heading to Scope for their home opener on Friday, October 13 versus the Springfield Falcons at 7:15 p.m. Season tickets, 20-game plans, ten-packs and group tickets are on sale now through the Admirals' office and through the Admirals' website.
