LETHBRIDGE, AB - The 2018 National Hockey League Entry Draft was held Saturday in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center and Lethbridge Hurricanes defenseman Calen Addison was selected in the second round, 53rd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Addison, 18, is the highest selected Hurricanes' player in the NHL Draft since 2009 when Carter Ashton was taken in the first round, 29th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Addison becomes the 15th player in Hurricanes history to be selected in the first or second round of the NHL Draft.
The 5'11 ", 178-pound defenseman recently completed his second season in the Western Hockey League with the Hurricanes appearing in 68 regular season games registering 65 points (11g-54a) along with 53 penalty minutes. Addison led all 'Canes defenseman in scoring and finished third in team scoring behind fellow Penguins prospect Jordy Bellerive and Los Angeles Kings prospect Brad Morrison. He added another 19 points (7g-12a) along with 20 penalty minutes in 16 post-season contests helping the Hurricanes to their second straight Eastern Conference Championship Series appearance.
The Brandon, Manitoba product was selected by the Hurricanes second overall in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. In his WHL career thus far with the Hurricanes, Addison has appeared in 135 career regular season games collecting 98 points (20g-78a) along with 107 penalty minutes. He has added 21 points (7g-14a) in 32 career post-season games.
Addison has represented Canada on the International stage at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament where he posted six points (2g-4a) along with four penalty minutes helping Canada win a Gold medal alongside Hurricanes head coach Brent Kisio.
