Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Newport, RI - Chase Achuff did it all Wednesday night, pitching three shutout innings after playing 10 at third base, hitting the go ahead, 2 RBI triple in the 13th, and picked up the win on the mound as Vermont topped Newport in 13 innings, 4-0.
It was a classic pitcher's duel through 12 innings, as both the starters and the bullpens of both teams were lights out. Daniel Hobbs (Wilton, NY/ SUNY Cortland) and Nic Enright (Richmond, VA/ Virginia Tech) traded shutout innings. Hobbs lasted six innings, giving up six hits and three walks while striking out four. Enright went seven innings, giving up only five hits and no walks while striking out nine.
Vermont would throw three relievers out of the pen before Achuff was finally called upon in the 11th to keep the game where it is. He got into some trouble in the 12th, but was able to strand runners on second and third.
The Mountaineers offense finally woke up in the top of the 13th. Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia) would lead off the inning with a double off the center field wall. Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern) would then drop down a bunt, and the pitcher Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, NY/ Georgetown) tried to get McGill at third, but both runners would be safe. Achuff then laced a triple to right center, scoring both runners. Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State) would then single Achuff home, and Kelley would score on a Ben Bavly (Newton, MA/ Northeastern) double. Achuff would come out for the bottom of the 13th and set the Gulls down 1-2-3 to secure the 4-0 victory.
Achuff picked up the win out of relief, throwing 3 innings, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out two. The loss for Newport went to Burke, who threw 5+ innings, giving up three runs on two hits while striking out seven.
Vermont (17-22) keeps their playoff hopes alive, as they now sit 4.5 games back of both Keene (21-17) and Upper Valley (21-17). With only five games remaining, Vermont needs some help to make a playoff run. They return to action Thursday, as they head to Paul Walsh Field to take on the New Bedford Bay Sox (16-23). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI, or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
