KEENE, NH - The Keene SwampBats (21-18) had their chances, but dropped their fourth straight with a 3-0 loss to the Upper Valley Nighthawks (22-17) on Thursday night at Alumni Field in Keene.
Keene had first and second with one out in three different innings, but were unable to score against the Nighthawks trio of RHP Levi Thomas (Troy-7.0 IP, 4 H, BB, 8 K), RHP Brian Weissert (Fordham-1.0 IP, H, 3 K) and LHP A.J. Franklin (Vanderbilt-1.0 IP, 2 K).
Thomas got the win to improve to 1-3, while Franklin notched his eighth save.
Upper Valley grabbed a 1-0 lead with a solo shot from Anthony Quirion (Lamar) in the top of the fourth.
Chris Berry's (North Florida) two-run shot in the fifth off of SwampBats starter Kyle Whitten (Virginia) stretched the lead to 3-0.
Whitten (2-3) allowed three runs on three hits to go along with a walk and four strikeouts in five innings of work.
RHPs Erik Kaiser (Vanderbilt-3.0 IP, BB, 3 K) and RHP Justin Willis (Vanderbilt-1.0 IP, 3 K) tossed four shutout innings in relief for the SwampBats.
Keene heads to North Adams to battle the SteepleCats in a doubleheader on Saturday at Joe Wolfe Field. First pitch of game one is set for 6:30 and RHP Jake McLinskey (2-2, 3.41) out of Kennesaw State University will get the start for the SwampBats.
