Nighthawks Shutout Swamp Bats

July 26, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) - Upper Valley Nighthawks News Release

KEENE, N.H. - The Upper Valley Nighthawks became the first team to shutout the Keene Swamp Bats this summer, as they blanked the Northern Division-rival 3-0 at Alumni Field on Thursday night.

Upper Valley advances to 22-17 with the victory, while the Swamp Bats fall to 21-18. The Nighthawks now sit in 2nd place in the NECBL Northern Division, just one game above Keene and Sanford.

Anthony Quirion (Lamar University) put the Nighthawks on the scoreboard in the top of the 4th inning with a one-out solo homer.

Just one inning later, Chris Berry (University of North Florida) drove a 3-1 pitch over the fence and added two more runs to Nighthawks' tally, giving them a 3-0 lead that stuck.

After this evening's contest, Quirion and Berry are tied for the team lead in homers. Both sluggers have hit six homers this summer.

Upper Valley starter Levi Thomas (Troy University) put on a fantastic display, tossing seven innings, giving up four hits, and striking out eight. Reliever Brian Weissert (Fordham University) followed with three strikeouts in a one-hit 8th inning, before AJ Franklin (Vanderbilt University) struck out a pair of Swamp Bats in a perfect ninth inning.

The Nighthawks return to action tomorrow evening, traveling to Holyoke, Massachusetts for a 6:30 P.M. contest with the 1st-place Valley Blue Sox. Cole Stetzar (St. Joseph's University) will get the nod for the Nighthawks. Mike Lord will have all of the action covered on the NECBL Broadcast Network.

The team returns home on Saturday for Diamond Dig Night, sponsored by Von Bargen's Jewelry. Come ready to dig and take advantage of your opportunity to go home with a real diamond! First pitch between the Upper Valley Nighthawks and the Vermont Mountaineers is scheduled for 6:30 P.M.
