Alaska Aces News Release
Tyler Ruegsegger, Dan Kissel, and Scott Burt each had three-point nights as the Alaska Aces rode a huge first period to a 5-2 win over the Utah Grizzlies from the Maverik Center in Utah on Wednesday night. The Aces moved into first place in the Mountain Division, based on winning percentage, and won for the fifth time in their last six games. Alaska improved to 29-19-3 on the year. The Aces finish their road trip visiting the Idaho Steelheads on Friday and Saturday night. The Aces exploded in the opening frame, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Ruegsegger started the scoring at 7:02, curling in from the left circle and driving the net hard, before stuffing in a goal against his former team. The Aces added to their lead late in the period when Kissel scored from the left circle at 18:03. Kory Flaite tallied for the fourth time in his last four games at 19:55 on a power play to complete the first period onslaught. The Aces outshot the Grizzlies 14-5 in the period.
Utah got on the board just 20 seconds into the second period when Brett Parnham scored to make it 3-1. The Aces thought they had answered immediately after the goal, but had a goal disallowed after traffic was on top of the Utah net and the puck appeared to be poked over the goal line. The 3-1 score remained through the end of the period.
Alaska jumped back up by three when Garry Nunn scored 1:37 into the third period. The gap remained at three until the final minutes. Utah's Matt Clarke scored a shorthanded goal, and Kissel tallied his second of the night less than a minute later for a power play goal, and cap the scoring.
Gerald Coleman (21-13-1) made 31 saves on 33 shots, earning the win. Andrew Engelage (18-10-4) suffered the loss, making 29 saves on 34 shots. The Aces power play went 2-5, while the Grizzlies went 0-3. The Aces outshot the Grizzlies 34-33 in the game.
The Aces continue their four-game road trip with a two-game set in Idaho on Friday and Saturday night. They will return on Thursday, Feb. 24th, 25th and 27th to host the Las Vegas Thunder.
