ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Andrew Carroll's winner in the eighth round helped the Bakersfield Condors send the Alaska Aces (37-16-5, 79 points) to a 3-2 shootout loss before 4,117 fans at Sullivan Arena on Sunday.
The Aces, spotted a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes, settled for five points in three games against Bakersfield and were aided by Alex Belzile's first goal in an Aces sweater, while Brad Richard tallied a power play goal.
Gerald Coleman took the shootout loss on 25 saves while stopping six more in the shootout. Laurent Brossoit earned the win on 36 saves.
Belzile hammered a one-timer by Brossoit in the slot, set up by Tyler Mosienko, just three minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. Brad Richard followed with a power play goal at 6:16 off the rush, set up by Nick Mazzolini's drop pass in the slot. Richard then blasted a slapshot by Brossoit.
Carroll got Bakersfield back into the game shortly after their power play expired in the second period with 3:15 remaining when he got a piece of Eric Burgdoerfer's shot from the right point that caromed past Coleman's blocker.
Travis Gawryletz's first goal in a Condors uniform leveled the game at 2:12 of the third period when he snuck a rebound past Coleman's glove, shortly after Coleman stopped Gawryletz on a breakaway.
The Aces threatened in the closing seconds of regulation by cycling the Bakersfield net, but Peter Sivak's sharp angled bid from the left circle was cut off by Brossoit to force overtime.
After a scoreless five minute period, Connolly got the Aces on the board in the second round of the shootout with a snap shot past Brossoit, answered by Michael Neal's wrister in the fourth round.
Brossoit denied Corey Syvret's swing from the left side in the top of the eighth round, setting up Carroll's deke to the blocker side which ended the game.
NOTES: The Aces scratched James Martin, Mathew Sisca, Tim Coffman, Zach McKelvie, Eli Zuck, David Eddy ... the Aces record against Bakersfield moved to 5-1-1 this season ... Mazzolini's assist was his 14th point in the last 13 games ... the Aces fell to 3-3 in shootouts this season.
