Aces land Shields in exchange for Moren

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces have acquired forward Colin Shields from the Greenville Grrrowl in exchange for defenseman Ryan Moren, who was subsequently traded to the Texas Wildcatters along with future considerations for the rights to forward John Snowden.
Shields, who already has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Alaska for the 2005-06 season, began last year with the San Diego Gulls, scoring three goals and assisting on 11 others before being shipped to Atlantic City. He averaged nearly a point per game (6g-12a) with the Boardwalk Bullies, but was traded to Greenville for the last nine games of the regular season, where the rookie added three assists for a total of 35 points on nine goals and 26 assists in 62 games.
Originally a sixth-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2000 NHL Draft, the 5-11, 180-pound Shields spent three years at the University of Maine, including two with new Aces teammates Chris Heisten and John Ronan. He scored 29 goals as a freshman for the Black Bears in 2001-02 and finished his three-season tenure with 117 points on 61 goals and 56 assists in 120 games. Shields, a 25-year-old native of Glasgow, Scotland, helped lead Maine to a pair of appearances in the NCAA championship game, losing 4-3 in overtime to Minnesota in 2002 and 1-0 to Denver in 2004, the year he earned All-American honors.
Moren spent three years with the Aces, improving from a -50 rating in a dreary 2002-03 campaign to +19 last season, fourth-best on the team. He also matched his career-high with 22 points on seven goals and 15 assists. Moren, who is 19 days older than Shields, registered 57 points (15g-42a) and 82 PIM for the Aces in 187 games.
The Aces open the 2005-06 regular season at home, Friday, October 21 at 7:15 p.m. against Shields's old team, San Diego. Alaska advanced to Game Seven of the National Conference Finals last year after winning its first division title in 10 years with a 45-19-8 record during the regular season.
