Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - With 16 players (nine forwards, six defensemen and one goaltender) locked into contracts for the 2005-06 season, Head Coach and General Manager Bryan Maxwell added a puck stopper to the Victoria Salmon Kings on Friday with the signing of B.J. Boxma.
"We have seen BJ play a lot of games in Kootenay and Swift Current, he has always been a solid goaltender and he knows what it takes to win," said Bryan Maxwell Head Coach and General Manager of the Victoria Salmon Kings.
The 6'0 180lbs. native of Edson, Alta played five full seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Edmonton/Kootenay Ice and the Swift Current Broncos. Boxma was a solid goaltender throughout his junior career with his best numbers across the board in 2000-01. He led the Broncos with a record of 26-14-2 in 44 starts, he posted a 2.66 GAA and a .902 save percentage.
Boxma brings the Salmon Kings some professional hockey experience. The 24-year-old played in 26 games in 2002-03 with the Long Beach Ice Dogs of the WCHL, 2 games with the Reading Royals of the ECHL and one game with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL.
Boxma made the decision to return to school and in 2003-04 he played 16 games at Grant McEwen College in the ACAC. Boxma moved to the Canadian Interuniversity Sports in the 2004-05 season where he started in nine games with the CIS champions University of Alberta. Boxma finished the season with a record of seven wins and one loss.
"It is great to have two goaltenders under contract now," said Maxwell "We have had a chance to see both of these guys perform (Rob Muntain and Boxma) and it will be very exciting watching them play for the Salmon Kings this season."
