Alaska Aces News Release
Michael Ouzas made 33 saves and stopped all six shooters he faced in the shootout to lead the Las Vegas Wranglers to a 3-2 shootout win over the Alaska Aces on Sunday night from Sullivan Arena. The Aces managed to take five of a possible six points in the three-game set, and have points in their last seven games and 10 of their last 11. Las Vegas inched one point ahead of Las Vegas for first place in the Western Conference with 17 games remaining in the regular season. The Aces fell to 33-19-4 on the year, and 2-1 in shootouts. The Aces will now travel to Stockton for a three-game road trip with the Thunder on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Blair Riley scored the only goal of the opening period when he put the Wranglers on top at 6:34 to make it 1-0. The Wranglers outshot the Aces 11-9 in the opening period.
Alaska began to create more opportunities in the second period when they outshot Las Vegas 15-7, and got on the board for the first time in the game. Dan Kissel scored his sixth goal in as many games at 13:55 on a Tyler Ruegsegger rebound and tied the score 1-1. However, just 88 seconds later Las Vegas reclaimed the lead when Jerry Pollastrone capped off an odd-man rush at 15:23. The Wranglers took the 2-1 lead into the third period.
The Aces tied the game for the second time in the third period when Brian Swanson made a great move behind the net to feed Scott Howes at the top of the crease, and Howes buried it into the top right corner of the net at 8:59 to make it 2-2. The score held through regulation, and the clubs went to overtime for the second straight game. In the opening minute of overtime, Ouzas made a brilliant, diving save to deny Steve Ward from the right circle. Las Vegas later had a goal waived off when Colin Long's shot into the net came well after a collision between Josh Lunden and Adam Courchaine took the net off its pegs.
In the shootout, the teams were unable to score through the first five rounds, and Blake Gallagher scored in the sixth round to give the Wranglers the lead. Aces captain, Scott Burt was denied in his attempt to extend the game, and the Wranglers earned the victory.
Adam Courchaine (12-6-2) made 25 saves on 27 shots, taking the overtime loss. Michael Ouzas (15-10-1) earned the win, making 33 saves on 35 shots. The Aces power play went 0-3, while the Wranglers went 0-3. The Aces outshot the Wranglers 35-28 in the game.
The Aces will now travel to Stockton for a three-game road trip with the Thunder on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
