Aces bump up roster
March 4, 2003 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Alexandria Aces News Release
The Alexandria Aces expanded their roster in more ways than one Tuesday, signing pitchers Courtney Jenkins, Dennis Flippen and John Thompson.
Jenkins, a 6-foot-4 right-hander, returns to the Aces for a second season. An Alexandria resident, he signed with the Aces last season after a short stint in the Southeastern League. Jenkins compiled a 5-1 won-loss record and 2.87 earned-run average in eight games for Alexandria.
An All-Conference selection at UC-Davis, Flippen gives Aces manager R.C. Lichtenstein some flexibility with his roster. In 2002 the right-handed hitting Flippen led his team offensively, hitting .372 with 19 doubles, 11 home runs and 50 RBIs. He also finished the season with only five fielding errors at first base, committing none over the season's final 39 games.
"He throws between 90-92 mph with a good slider and he can also hit. I'll play him some at first base and give him a chance to be a two-way player," said Lichtenstein.
Thompson, entering his 12th season in professional baseball, will work out of the bullpen as a middle reliever. He has a 34-49 career won-loss record with 52 saves and a 4.69 earned-run average.
The Aces now have eight players under contract for the 2003 Central Baseball League season.
The Central Baseball League is an independent league of ten professional teams located throughout four southern states. The league is preparing for its 10th season this summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Rio Grande Valley (Harlingen), San Angelo, Robstown and Ft. Worth, Texas; Alexandria and Shreveport, Louisiana; Springfield/Ozark, Missouri and Jackson, Mississippi. The CBL will play a 96-game schedule between May and August 2003.
