Alaska Aces News Release
Anchorage, Alaska â The Anchorage Aces have signed center Eric Landry and defenseman Tim Donnelly for the 2002-03 season.
The 26-year-old Landry took a year off from pro hockey last year after a solid season in the WPHL (now CHL) in 2000-01. In only 52 games, he scored nine goals and assisted on 10 others while racking up 159 minutes in penalties. Landry brings a reputation for grit and toughness despite his relatively modest 6-1, 200-pound frame. His best two seasons in pro hockey after being drafted by San Jose in 1994 came under head coach Rod Davidson in Alexandria (La.) and Indianapolis, when he piled up a combined 28 goals and 308 PIM and won the 2000 CHL championship with the Ice.
"I think Eric is going to be an immediate fan favorite," said Davidson. "He doesn't look like a heavyweight, but I've rarely had guys who are as tough and nasty as he can be, plus he can actually play. Your name doesn't come up in the NHL Draft unless you're a major talent."
Donnelly packs 225 pounds on his 6-3 frame and arrives in Anchorage after a solid rookie campaign in the CHL with Tulsa last year. In 64 games for the Oilers, he contributed four goals, 10 assists, and 106 PIM. Donnelly, who turned 25 in April, played collegiate hockey for the University of Alberta, where he helped the Golden Bears win back-to-back CIAU championships in 1999 and 2000 and finished his career with 41 points (9g-32a) in 106 games.
"Tim is a solid, reliable, stay-at-home defenseman," said Davidson. "I think we have plenty of horses up front, now we have to start building a sound team defensively."
The Aces open training camp at Tesoro Sports Centre in Anchorage tomorrow morning with a two-hour practice beginning at 10:00 a.m. All interested parties are invited to attend, free of charge.
