Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â The Alaska Aces have signed free agent forward Doug Scatchard, while forward Chris Heisten and defenseman Jon Insana also have agreed to terms on a one-year deal after being acquired in an August 3 trade with Bakersfield.
The 23-year-old Scatchard became a free agent earlier this summer when the ECHL terminated Roanoke's league membership. As a rookie, the 6-0, 190-pound British Columbia native scored 10 goals in 65 games for the Express to go along with 12 assists and 107 minutes in penalties. He appeared in three games, accumulating 15 PIM, during Roanoke's opening round playoff loss to eventual Kelly Cup finalist Florida. Doug Scatchard's older brother, Dave, is a current member of the New York Islanders and has 107 goals in 526 games over seven NHL seasons.
Heisten and Insana arrived in a three-way trade with the Everblades and the Condors last month that sent Bret DeCecco to Bakersfield. Heisten, 25, grew up in Anchorage and attended Dimond High School before heading to the USHL in 1997 to play for the Lincoln Stars. That season in juniors helped prepare the six-foot, 195-pounder for the jump to Maine, where he scored 35 goals and 47 assists in 128 games for the Black Bears, including a 31-point campaign (15g-16a) in his senior season of 2002-03. He was part of two teams that reached the Frozen Four, including the 2001-02 squad that lost 4-3 in overtime to Minnesota in the national championship game.
Insana spent four years at Michigan State University before turning pro in 2002 and playing most of his first two seasons in Florida. A six-foot, 185-pound defenseman, Insana played on two Spartan teams that advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four while contributing seven goals and nine assists in 164 career games. Insana, who turned 24 earlier this month, did not appear in the playoffs because of a broken leg suffered late in the regular season.
The Aces meet the Greenville Grrrowl in a two-game preseason series at Sullivan Arena October 13-14, with both games slated for a 7:15 p.m. start. Alaska opens up its regular season at Idaho the following weekend before returning home for a three-game set with San Diego at Sullivan Arena, beginning October 29. KFQD 750 AM will again serve as the flagship station for Alaska Aces games, with the live feed also available at www.alaskaaces.com, which also will offer live video webcasts of all Aces home games and selected road contests, courtesy of B2 Networks.
