Abercrombie Breaks American Association Record, Fish Fall to Fargo

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (29-39) fell 4-2 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (37-28) at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the loss, there was something to be celebrated at Shaw Park. After nine years in the American Association, Reggie Abercrombie struck his 802nd base hit, breaking the American Association's all-time hits record previously held by David Espinoza . Abercrombie tied Espinoza's record of 801 in the bottom of the first, hammering a two-run homer over the left-field fence.

The home run gave the Fish a 2-1 lead heading into the second. RedHawks outfielder Devan Ahart opened scoring early, hitting a solo homer over the right-field fence in the top of the first.

In the second, Charlie Valerio hit a one-out single to bring the tying run on base. Tim Colwell bunted for a base hit, advancing to second when Maikol Gonzalez loaded the bases with a line-drive single to centre. With a sacrifice fly, Derrick Fox tied the game at 2-2.

In the top of the fifth, the RedHawks scored their final two runs. Grant Heyman started off the inning by robbing Maikol Gonzalez of a base hit with a somersaulting catch out in left field. Fox got aboard with a two-out single to centre. He advanced to second after Goldeyes starting pitcher Tyler Herron issued a walk to Brennan Metzger. Back-to-back two-out, RBI singles from Ahart and Leobaldo Pina put the RedHawks ahead 4-2.

The Fish had good opportunities to pull ahead in the sixth and ninth, but RedHawks pitchers D.J. Brown and Geoff Broussard worked their way out of bases-loaded jams. Overall, the Goldeyes stranded twelve runners on base.

D.J. Browne picked up the win for the RedHawks, allowing two earned runs on five hits over six innings. Herron took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits over five innings. Randy McCurry picked up the save.

The Goldeyes now head to Lincoln to play a three-game series against the Saltdogs, beginning Tuesday at 6:45pm. Right-hander JC Sulbaran (1-2, 7.11) takes the mound for the Goldeyes and will face Michael Tamburino (4-5, 4.16) for the Saltdogs.
