ABA Salutes Barry Zito

July 11, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Indianapolis, IN. The ABA Salutes Barry Zito, the Oakland A's All-Star pitcher and former Cy Young Award winner for supporting our military. Barry will donate $500 for each strikeout in the Major League All Star Game by both National League and American League pitchers - with the donation going to help injured servicemen and their families at hospitals like Walter Reed Hospital and Bethesda Naval Hospital. According to Jennifer Hester, ABA Salute coordinator, "While it is not likely that 27 players from each side will strike out in the All Star Game, we know that there will be strikeouts as the pitchers are very strong. What is important is that a person like Mr. Zito recognizes the tremendous service that our military provides to protect our freedom and to bring freedom to Iraq and Afghanistan - and that the size of the donation is not as important as the support and moral boost it provides our injured servicemen and their families. Thank you Mr. Zito, we'll be watching the All Star Game and counting the strikeouts."

ABA Salute helps raise funds for our military and families through the ABA Auction and other means and makes donations to a variety of causes in their support. For more information, visit www.abasalute.com or email jennifer@abasalute.com.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
