Edmonton Elks News Release
(Edmonton) It's the last chance to make a lasting impression for a number of Eskimo players trying to crack the line-up for the first time, or for veterans trying to fend off stiff competition.
Ricky Ray will see the lion's share of the work against the Lions with the rest of the time split between veteran Jason Maas and sophomore Jared Zabransky. An injury earlier this week to centre Aaron Fiacconi means veteran Kyle Koch will handle the snaps. The move creates an opportunity for non-imports Greg Wojt, Adam Rogers and Gord Hinse to assert themselves for a spot on the line. At slotback, Kamau Peterson, the 2008 CFL Most Outstanding Canadian, is being challenged by ex-Argo Andre Talbot who's had a strong camp. Receiver Kelly Campbell has practiced just once since returning to the Esks and is now sidelined with a throat infection. Rookie Daniel Libre will get a long look Sunday afternoon as incumbent Arkee Whitlock, who's been hobbled with a leg injury for most of camp, will miss his second pre-season game.
Defensively, all eyes will be on the return of Adam Braidwood who's attempting a comeback after missing the last two years with on-going knee problems. Braidwood, who was tentative at the start of camp and sat out last week against Calgary, has practiced hard and declares himself ready for game action. The Delta BC native and Washington State product hasn't played since October 26, 2007. NFL veteran Kenny Pettway is growing more comfortable with the CFL game could nail down a spot with a solid performance against the Lions.
Last week the Eskimos made some history of their own with the first game played on the new artificial surface at Commonwealth Stadium. Sunday, they'll provide the opposition for the Lions who play their first ever game at Empire Field, a temporary open-air stadium that sits on the site of old Empire Stadium, home of the Leos from 1954 to 1982. The last time the Eskimos played outdoors in Vancouver was July 25, 1982.
The Eskimos head to Empire Fields in Vancouver on Sunday, June 20th for the final pre-season tilt against the BC Lions. Kick off is at 3:00pm.
