'A-Team' bobblehead giveaway at Sunday's Avenger game
April 9, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- The first 5,000 fans through the gates at STAPLES Center for Sunday's Arena Football League game between the Los Angeles Avengers and Arizona Rattlers will receive a bobblehead doll depicting an "A-Team" dancer, compliments of Carl's Jr.
The giveaway is believed to be the first-ever bobblehead doll honoring a dance team.
Following the conclusion of the previous two seasons (2001 and 2002), the "A-Team" earned the AFL's "Best Dance Team" award and is considered one of the best squads in all of professional sports. Under the guidance of artistic director Denise Marie Jerome, the "A-Team" features 19 of Los Angeles' finest dancers. Eight of them have been with the squad since the Avengers' inaugural 2000 season.
"The 'A-Team' is a major part of what makes the overall experience of going to an Avenger game complete," said Avenger president and chief operating officer Todd Merkow. "They have been extremely popular with our fans for the past four seasons and are well deserving of their own bobblehead."
Kickoff of Sunday's game is set for noon (Pacific) and gates will open at 11 a.m. The contest will be televised live on NBC, with Tom Hammond and Pat Haden calling all the action.
Tickets are going fast, but are still available at all Ticketmaster outlets and the STAPLES Center box office, which is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Monday through Saturday). Tickets also may be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at (213) 480-3232 or logging onto its official website at www.ticketmaster.com.
At 8-2 on the season, the Avengers have a one-game lead in the Western Division and currently hold the No. 1 seed for the AFL playoffs, which begin on May 24. Arizona is 5-5 on the year, but leads the all-time series between the two division rivals with five victories in six meetings.
Sunday marks the sixth bobblehead doll giveaway in the four-year history of the Avengers. At one game in 2001, the team handed out a generic player doll. In 2002, a series of three different bobbleheads, featuring quarterback Tony Graziani, offensive specialist Chris Jackson and wide receiver/linebacker Greg Hopkins, were given away compliments of Carl's Jr. Earlier this season, on Feb. 9, the Avengers honored their team mascot "T.D." with his own bobblehead.
