Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
For the second time in four days, the Waterloo Black Hawks recorded six goals to top an in-state rival, rolling past the Dubuque Fighting Saints 6-1 on Friday at Young Arena
Tuesday, Waterloo had defeated the Sioux City Musketeers 6-5 in overtime on the road. Friday's effort matched that 2018/19 single-game best scoring count, and there nearly was more offense.
Each team had a disallowed goal, overturned by video review during the opening 20 minutes. A goal initially credited to the Hawks was washed out when it was determined that the puck did not completely cross the goal line. A Saints score was nullified because of a deflection with a high stick. The goal which did count in the opening frame came during a Waterloo power play at 6:47. Vladislav Firstov moved out of the right corner to the top of the crease and stuffed in his chance.
Waterloo pulled away with three second period goals. The first was lifted in by Matej Blumel at 6:10; Matt Koopman's pass intended for Firstov found Blumel instead, and he beat Matt Thiessen to the stick side through traffic.
The Hawks' other two second period goals came amidst a sequence of penalties. Firstov snapped in his second of the night from the right circle during a four-on-three advantage at 17:53. Less than a minute later, Emil Ohrvall beat Thiessen on a four-on-four rush, using a backpedaling defender as a screen.
In the third, Joe Cassetti cashed in for the Hawks' third power play goal of the night. James Marooney's shot ricocheted back to Cassetti off the end wall for the veteran forward to finish in the opening minute of the period. Three minutes later, the Saints got their only goal of the evening from Derek Contessa, denying Jared Moe's shutout bid. Moe would claim the win with 26 saves.
Kyle Haskins capped the scoring in the closing minutes, cashing in on a two-on-one rush with a feed from Ryan Drkulec.
Waterloo goes on the road for their next three games, beginning Saturday with an instant rematch against the Fighting Saints at Mystique Ice Center.
