
Flying Aces Hold on to Defeat Phantoms in Shootout

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Flying Aces defeated the Youngstown Phantoms, 7-6 in the shootout in a high-scoring affair. Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the way to victory with a three-point night and the game-winning shootout goal.
The Flying Aces got on the board first at 1:04 in the first period. Tate Singleton (West Lebanon, NH) stole the puck and passed to Janicke who passed to Ryan Siedem (Madison, NJ) who was alone in the right circle. Siedem passed the puck through the slot to Singleton on the backdoor who tipped the puck into the net to make it 1-0.
At 5:24 in the first, Youngstown blocked a shot from the point and Joseph Abate was able to explode on a breakaway where he scored to tie the game.
Joe Dunlap (Windham, NH) scored at 6:35 in the first after he corralled a pass from Lynden Breen (Grand Bay-Westfield, NB) that had been tipped by a Youngstown defenseman to make it 2-1.
At 8:12 in the first, Siedem stole the puck from the Phantoms seeking to exit the zone. He drove towards the net and found Janicke with a quick backhand pass, which Janicke chipped over the goaltender's glove.
The Aces scored on the power play at 14:31 in the first. Chase Foley (Mendota Heights, Minn.) passed to Janicke at the top of the left circle. Janicke one-timed the puck, and Brad Marek (Big Rapids, Mich.) tipped the puck into the net to give the Aces a three-goal lead.
Gianfranco Cassaro scored for Youngstown at 15:57 in the first on the power play with a blast from the point through several net-front bodies.
At 5:17 in the second, Cal Kiefiuk (Macomb, Mich.) made the royal road pass to Jeremy Davidson (Schoolcraft, Mich.). Davidson shot the puck and it slipped past the goaltender where Breen cleaned up the loose puck and put it in the back of the net to make it 5-2.
Breen scored his second of the night at 11:18 in the second. The Phantoms were on the power play and rang a shot off the post. Breen picked up the rebound and tore out on a two-on-one breakaway where he fired the shot past the netminder.
Youngstown scored on the power play at 13:40 in the second when Joseph Abate tipped a shot from the point to decrease the Aces' lead to three.
Joseph Abate scored his hat trick goal for Youngstown at 6:06 in the third when he tipped a shot from the right point five-hole.
At 14:44 in the third, Trevor Kuntar settled a bouncing puck and fired it into the net for Youngstown to make it a one-goal game.
The Phantoms tied the game at 18:18 when Jack Malone scored on the backdoor after a slot pass.
Neither team scored during overtime, but Ryan Snowden (Kennett Square, Penn.) made several key saves for the Aces.
Janicke broke through during the third round of the shootout to score for the Aces, and Snowden stopped the final shot to ensure the victory for Central Illinois.
The team remains in Youngstown for the rest of the three-game series with games tomorrow and Monday. They travel to Dubuque for a match against the Fighting Saints on November 9 before finally returning home on November 10 for Salute to Service Night.
