Rockford Lightning News Release

After losing the biggest offensive threat in the CBA, the Lightning has picked up a defensive stopper to take his place.

Marshall Phillips was an NBDL's All-Defensive first team performer last season averaging 13.8 points 5.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals for the Roanoke Dazzle. Prior to that Phillips averaged a team leading 18.3 points per game for the USBL runners-up Dodge City Legend in the summer of 2001.

"Marshall is an extremely active player who is known for his defensive capabilities," said Lightning Head Coach Chris Daleo, "He'll be great to use late in the game when we need a few big defensive stops."

Phillips has two years of CBA experience with the Fort Wayne Fury, the 6'5" guard played in the CBA Rookie all Star Game in 2000. Phillips was the only Fury player to see action in 55 games that year, averaging 7.2 points and 3.7 rebounds a contest. The following season Phillips averaged 15.4 points in 20 games with the Fury.

The two time All Southern Conference performer at Appalachian State has spent most of this season even further south, earning All-Star status in both Venezuela and Mexico.

Phillips began his college career at Campbellsville College in Kentucky, the same NAIA school attended by Phillips roster replacement, David Harrison, who signed on to play in Lebanon earlier this week.
