A Late Push Falls Short as Raiders Fall 3-2 in Swift Current
October 26, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release
The Prince Albert Raiders held 1-0 and 2-1 leads on Wednesday night in Swift Current, but the Broncos came back to win 3-2 at the InnovationPlex.
Ryder Ritchie opened the scoring 3:27 into the first period for the Raiders. A shot from Justice Christensen was stopped by Reid Dyck from the slot, but Ritchie followed up on the rebound and buried his eighth goal of the season to give Prince Albert a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos responded 2:54 later, tying the game on an odd man rush. A shot form Luke Mistelbacher was stopped by Chase Coward, but the rebound was sitting right in the crease. Connor Gabriel crashed the net and buried the rebound before a Raider defender could sweep the puck out of harm's way. Gabriel's second goal of the season tied things up at 1-1.
With 4:48 left in the first period, the Raiders regained their lead. Eric Johnston sent a lead feed ahead to Brayden Dube, who worked his way into the Broncos zone on a partial breakaway. With a Swift Current defender chasing him down, Dube went to his backhand and slipped a shot five hole past Dyck, giving Prince Albert a 2-1 lead with his fourth goal of the season.
With 1:37 left in the first, the Broncos tied things up again. Leading a three on two rush, Mathew Ward entered the zone and fed a pass to the slot for Clarke Caswell. Taking the pass on the tape, Caswell rifled a one timer past Coward, who couldn't get across to make a miraculous glove save. Caswell's fourth goal of the season evened the score at 2-2 after 20 minutes of play.
A very quick second period passed by with no goals scored, but the Broncos took the lead just 3:40 into the second period. Just after a 5 on 3 powerplay expired, Swift Current was able to score during the following 5 on 4 action. It was Mathew Ward in front who snuck a shot just past the right pad of Coward, scoring his seventh goal of the season to put the Broncos in front 3-2.
The Raiders pushed back with an empty net in the final minute and a half of the third period, but Reid Dyck stood tall in goal with a couple of big saves late, as the Broncos held on to take a 3-2 win.
The Raiders (7-5-0-1) return to the Art Hauser Centre on Saturday night for the home and home finale against Swift Current. Puck drop is Saturday night.
