Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs bullpen allowed only one run in 10 innings of work, as Southern Maryland defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 2- 1 in 10 innings on Saturday night in front of 5,037 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium.
Lancaster got the scoring started in the second as designated hitter Fernando Seguignol (13) blasted a solo-homer to left to give the Barnstormers a 1-0 lead.
Southern Maryland bounced back in the fourth as a two-out RBI single from right fielder Ben Harrison tied the game.
Things stayed that way as the Blue Crabs bullpen continued to scintillate, allowing only five hits for the game and striking out nine hitters against the league's second- best hitting team.
Southern Maryland finally pushed the winning run across in the 10th inning. After centerfielder Adam Godwin led off the frame with a walk, second-baseman
Brandon Pinckney laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by Lancaster reliever Jonah Bayliss. Godwin went to third on the play, but Pinckney was thrown
out at second as he tried to advance a base on the errant throw from Bayliss.
With a runner at third and one out, the Barnstormers chose not to walk designated hitter Brian Barton, which would have set up a potential inning-ending double
play. Instead, with two strikes, Barton hit a deep fly ball into centerfield, which allowed Godwin to tag from third and score on a sacrifice fly and end the game. It
was the second extra-inning win in three games for the Blue Crabs who moved to 4-5 in extra-inning games this season.
Shortstop Tanner Townsend had two of Southern Maryland's seven hits with a single and triple. Catcher Matt Tupman had two singles in three at-bats for the
Barnstormers.
Steve Palazzolo (9-2) got the win, but the entire Blue Crabs bullpen was sensational. Left-hander Jason Waddell started the game with three innings of one-run ball
on two hits. Fellow southpaw Bryan Dumesnil retired all nine men he faced in three frames, while righty Eduardo Morlan tossed two scoreless innings to go along
with two more scoreless innings by Palazzolo whose nine wins are a team-high.
The bullpen had to pitch as scheduled starter Michael Schlact was scratched. He is expected to make his next start in five days.
Bayliss (2-1) took the loss for Lancaster after allowing the unearned run in the 10th. Overshadowed was a brilliant starting performance by Barnstormers starter J.D.
Durbin who allowed one run on six hits in seven innings of work. He walked only one and struck out six.
The Blue Crabs will face the Barnstormers in game two of their three-game series on Saturday at 6:35. The Blue Crabs will send right-hander Nick Green (7-5, 4.07 ERA) to the hill against southpaw John Halama (5-4, 5.38 ERA) for the Barnstormers. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
