Rockford RiverHawks News Release
Evansville, Ind. - With each team winning in its final at-bat in the first two games, Friday night's contest was only a fitting conclusion to the series between the RiverHawks and Otters.
Both starters, Rockford's Frank James and Evansville's Chris Pillsbury, were masterful, as neither allowed an earned run in 17 innings combined.
James (1-1) went eight innings plus three batters into the ninth to earn his first win since returning to Rockford before the All-Star break. He surrendered six hits and struck out four while walking just one. He faced the minimum in four innings and retired nine in a row at one point.
Pillsbury (4-5) took the complete-game loss, giving up just three hits, striking out nine, and walking one. He faced the minimum in six innings and retired 16 straight from the second to the seventh. However, he threw three wild pitches and committed a critical error in the ninth, when Rockford scored the lone run of the game.
Todd Dulaney reached first base on an error by the Evansville shortstop, Brian McKenna, to lead off the top of the ninth. During the next at-bat, Dulaney advanced all the way to third base on an errant pickoff throw by Pillsbury. He then came home on a wild pitch to break a scoreless tie.
It was the second time in the series that the âHawks won the game on a run scored by Todd Dulaney on a wild pitch.
Jason Glosser picked up his eighth save and it was his toughest yet. He entered in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out. The right-hander struck out Beau Blacken for the first out and got Cole Hilt to hit into a game-ending double play, preserving Rockford's shutout win.
The RiverHawks return to Marinelli Field 7:05 p.m. Saturday to begin a three-game series against Ohio Valley. Continental Coupons and Pella Windows sponsor a RiverHawks baseball card set giveaway for the first 1,000 fans.
The 'Hawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
