Wolves Defenseman Mark Matheson Named Breslin Unsung Hero Award Winner
March 22, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
Chicago Wolves defenseman MArK MATHESON will receive the 2012 Tim Breslin Unsung Hero Award prior to the Wolves 3 p.m. home game on Sunday, March 25, at Allstate Arena. The award honors the Wolves player who best exemplifies Breslin's on-ice spirit, team-first attitude, and community involvement.
Breslin, one of the first three players signed by the Wolves after the franchise was formed in 1994, passed away on Feb. 9, 2005, due to complications from appendiceal cancer. The Addison native and Driscoll Catholic High School graduate played five seasons for the Wolves and earned a ring on the 1998 Turner Cup Championship squad. Breslin's family will attend the on-ice ceremony for MATHESON.
"Mark shows the character that Tim had," said Wolves general manager wENdEll YOuNg. "He goes about his job with total professionalism. He has great character traits. That's probably the utmost reason why he deserves the award, but he does all of the things asked of him without any true recognition. He plays a lot of minutes and doesn't really get a lot of accolades." MATHESON earned the Breslin Award after fans went to ChicagoWolves.com and cast their votes for the three candidates nominated by the Wolves coaching staff: MATHESON, left wing bill SwEATT and forward TiM MillEr.
"I'm very grateful and appreciative," MATHESON said. "I know Tim Breslin was an important part of this organization, so I'm excited to receive this award. It's always nice to get recognized. I'm not a guy who really seeks that out. I think the award mirrors who I am and the kind of game I play. I just kind of work hard and do my thing and keep going." The 28-year-old MATHESON ranks second on the Wolves this season with a +14 plus/minus rating.
He also has contributed two goals and 11 assists in 50 games during his second year with the Wolves. MATHESON joins Jaime Sifers (2011), Matt Anderson (2010), Steve Martins (2009), Brian Sipotz (2008), Brian Fahey (2007), KEViN dOEll (2006) and Tim Wedderburn (2005) on the list of Unsung Hero honorees.
Sunday's pregame ceremony also will include Fenwick High School senior Kathleen McRoy, the winner of the Tim Breslin Memorial scholarship. McRoy, a Chicago resident, plans to major in Forensic Science and the Breslin scholarship provides one semester of tuition.
