Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, N.Y. - The Tri-City ValleyCats have announced their 2008 roster. The roster includes high draft picks, returning players, and players promoted from Rookie level Greeneville Astros.
This year's roster includes a pair of teammates from the University of Arizona. Thomas Steele, a centerfielder, was selected in the fourth round by the Astros. In 56 games this season with the Wildcats, Steele hit .315 with 11 home runs and 39 RBI. Steele's teammate and outfield companion, Jonathan Gaston, was selected three rounds later in the seventh by Houston. Gaston hit .312 with 13 home runs and 49 RBI this season.
Two familiar faces will return to Joseph L. Bruno this season. Reinaldo Pestana, a catcher from Guatire, Venezuela and David Miller, a pitcher from Ft. Worth, Texas are back with the ValleyCats after spending time with the team last year.
Other notable players on the ValleyCats roster include Astros' fifth round pick David Duncan, a junior left-handed pitcher out of Georgia Tech and Shane Wolf, a senior from Ithaca College. Wolf, a left handed pitcher who transferred to Ithaca before his junior year, is thrilled with the prospect of beginning his pro baseball career close to home. "I'm pretty excited to get out there and get going," Wolf said. "Of all the teams in the minor league system, I ended up somewhat close to home. And I have family in Albany, too."
The rest of the roster is filled out by this year's draft picks as well as six players who have been promoted to the ValleyCats from the Astros' Rookie League affiliate, the Greeneville Astros.
