State College Spikes News Release
(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - The State College Spikes announced that former Penn State All-American and NFL tight end Kyle Brady and retired Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky will make appearances at the June 20th Spikes game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on June 20th. The Spikes will take on the Auburn Doubledays (Toronto Blue Jays) at 7:05 p.m.
"We are pleased and honored to have Kyle Brady and Jerry Sandusky join us on Opening Weekend," says Spikes General Manager Rick Janac. "Jerry's work with The Second Mile is well known, and we're happy Kyle is able to come back to Happy Valley and see some of the fans again."
Brady was an All-American at tight end for the undefeated 1994 Penn State squad that won the Big Ten championship and the Rose Bowl. The Camp Hill, PA native was then selected ninth overall by the New York Jets in the 1995 NFL Draft, joining Ki-Jana Carter and Kerry Collins as top-ten draft picks that year. Brady played for the Jets from 1995 to 1998, then joined the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1999 to 2006. Most recently, he played with the 2007 AFC Champion New England Patriots.
Sandusky served as Penn State's defensive coordinator from 1977 to his retirement after the 1999 season. Under Sandusky, Penn State became known nationwide as "Linebacker U.," producing 14 All-Americans at linebacker, and winning two national championships, in 1982 and 1986. The Washington, PA native played for the Nittany Lions from 1963 to 1965. He then joined the coaching staff in 1969 as a defensive line coach, and became linebackers coach in 1970, serving in that role until 1976.
In 1977, Sandusky founded The Second Mile, an organization to help Pennsylvania children become valuable members of their communities through programs designed to develop self-esteem. The Second Mile now provides nine prevention, early intervention and community-based programs to more than 100,000 children across the state.
First pitch on June 20th is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Dave the Horn Guy will be on hand to provide entertainment, and there will be the first ever Fan Talent Show at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. June 20th is also Outdoorsman Night at the park. The home season will open up June 19th. Former Penn State star and Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson will be at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to throw out the first pitch. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased at the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Box Office, by calling (814) 272-1711, or online at www.statecollegespikes.com.
