Hamilton Tiger-Cats News Release
Hamilton, Ontario - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have re-signed import defensive ends Tim Cheatwood and James Cotton to new one-year (plus an option) contracts, the team announced today.
"Signing Tim and James was a big priority for us this off-season," said General Manager Rob Katz. "Both Cheatwood and Cotton have big play capabilities and we're excited to have them signed for the next couple of years."
Cheatwood, a 6-4, 258-pound native of East Cleveland, Ohio, returned to the Ticats lineup in mid-August after spending the first half of the season in the NFL's Houston Texans' training camp. In 10 games this season, Cheatwood recorded 34 defensive tackles and six quarterback sacks. Cheatwood has been named an East Division All-Star twice (2003, 2004) and a CFL All-Star once (2004). The four-year veteran has recorded 188 defensive tackles and 35 quarterback sacks in 63 career CFL games, all with the Ticats.
Cotton, a 6-2, 245-pound Cleveland, Ohio resident recorded 38 defensive tackles, 10 quarterback sacks, one interception that he returned for a touchdown and earned two CFL Lineman of the Week awards in 17 games this season. The 2005 campaign marked Cotton's third season in the CFL after spending 2001 and 2002 with the Calgary Stampeders.
Before turning pro, Cheatwood and Cotton were teammates for two seasons (1998-99) with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
"Our defence really came together when Cheatwood returned," head coach Greg Marshall noted. "Having both Tim and James in the lineup together for a full season is going to have a big effect on our defensive front. Not only does this solidify our front four, but with the pass rush they generate and the attention they will receive, it will make our secondary and cover defence that much better."
