Stewart selected to play in Canada-Russia Challenge

The Canadian Hockey League today announced the rosters of players who will compete in the 2004 CHL Canada-Russia Challenge.

Team OHL includes forwards Jeff Carter (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds), Michael Richards (Kitchener Rangers) and Anthony Stewart (Kingston Frontenacs), who helped Canada win a silver medal at the World Junior Championships in January. Team OHL also includes four members of Canada's championship Under-18 Team and 10 players who were invited to the Summer Evaluation Camp for the National Junior Team.

"We are looking forward to watching many of the brightest stars in the Ontario Hockey League compete in this prestigious series," said OHL Commissioner David Branch. "The rosters that were announced today in each of the three member leagues of the CHL is an accurate reflection of the caliber of our players that will represent Canada at the World Junior Championships."

The CHL Canada/Russia Challenge will be an integral part of the identification process for Canada's National Junior Team final selection camp. Each league's management team worked with Blair Mackasey, Hockey Canada's head scout, to select the roster of players who will represent each regional league.

"I want to thank each of the management teams that I worked with to identify and select the rosters that will represent the CHL in the Canada-Russia series," said Mackasey. "There were some difficult decisions, but I am satisfied that we have met our goals and objectives through this selection process. Now I am looking forward to what will prove to be a very exciting series."

The Quebec Remparts will host the first game of the series at Le Colisee on November 22. The second game will be played at the Bell Centre in Montreal on November 23. The Barrie Colts will host the first OHL-based game on November 25 followed by the Mississauga IceDogs on November 29. The series will conclude in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels hosting on December 1 and the Lethbridge Hurricanes hosting the finale on December 2.

All six games will be broadcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet and the two QMJHL-hosted games will be broadcast live in Quebec on RDS.

The Canadian Hockey League introduced the Canada-Russia Challenge in six CHL cities last November. The series drew capacity crowds in London, Sarnia, Brandon and Rimouski, along with strong attendance in Halifax and Calgary. Thousands more tuned in to watch the series on Rogers Sportsnet and RDS. The CHL won five of the six games in the series. 19 CHL players that played in the CHL Canada-Russia Challenge last year were selected to represent Canada in the World Junior Championships.
