Saginaw Spirit News Release

The Saginaw Spirit announce the acquisition of free agent defenseman Dan Idema. Idema is a 20 year old veteran of the WHL Medicine Hat Tigers, where he helped the team earn a spot in the 2004 Memorial Cup. He comes to Saginaw after a brief stint in the Dutch National League.

Idema has 10 goals, 32 assists and 240 penalty minutes in three seasons in the WHL. The Delta, British Columbia native is 6'2", 200 lbs.

Spirit General Manager Bob Mancini says he expects Idema to become a steadying force on the blue line. "We're happy to have Dan join the team. He has a wealth of experience that he can share with his teammates."

Spirit Head Coach Doug Lidster coached Idema in Medicine Hat during the 2002-03 season. "Dan's a smooth skater. He has the experience of being with a team from start up to Memorial Cup appearance, and knows the effort and commitment needed to make that step."

Idema is expected to join the Spirit in time for weekend games against Belleville and in Sault Ste. Marie.
