Sporting Kansas City News Release

(August 27, 2009) - Northeast Elementary students are getting a kick-start to a new school year with a once-in-a-lifetime surprise. Soccer heroes from the Kansas City Wizards are delivering not only back-to-school supplies, but a soccer clinic for students grades 6-8 on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at 1:45 p.m. Visiting team members will speak to students about their own educational experiences and challenges and the importance of educational attainment, no matter what the career or vocational dreams.

"We are very excited about this opportunity to work with the Kansas City Missouri School District," Wizards Captain Jimmy Conrad said. "The Kansas City Wizards and the Wives Club, who organized the donation and clinic, know the importance of giving back, and we hope all of this helps the students get off to a good start this year."

Two clinic sessions are scheduled for today: 1:45 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. with time for autographs, questions, and media presence. Community members are invited to this event. All participation is a support to the students. Participating players are: Jimmy Conrad, Adam Cristman, Kevin Hartman, Aaron Hohlbein Jack Jewsbury, Rauwshan McKenzie, Kurt Morsink and Kevin Souter.

This opportunity is provided by the Kansas City Wizards Wives Club, which "hopes to be able to contribute to the Wizards' efforts in making a positive impact on the Kansas City community." School supplies to be donated and distributed to Northeast Elementary School teachers were collected at annual "Stuff the Bus" benefit game on July 25. The drive on game day outside the gates at CommunityAmerica Ballpark encouraged patrons to donate. For every three items donated, soccer fans received a Wizards drawstring backpack, courtesy of M&I Bank. The game vs. Los Angeles Galaxy was a standing-room-only crowd with international superstar David Beckham on the field. "The game was a tie," said Northeast principal Belinda Goolsby, "but the team and the Wives Club are winners in this community. We thank them . . . the students were thrilled when we told them about the visit and clinic."
