Ottawa 67's News Release

(Ottawa, ON.): The Ottawa 67's, holders of the first-overall pick in the 2013 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection Draft, today announced that forward Travis Konecny of the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs will be chosen with their top pick. The announcement was made 24-hours in advance of the draft at a news conference held in the foyer of the City of Ottawa Archives.

"It's an historic day in the history of the 67's franchise," said team Governor, Jeff Hunt. "The last first-overall pick we had was Alyn McCauley in 1993, and he had a tremendous impact on the franchise. We believe Travis will also be an impact player and I'm looking forward to seeing him in our lineup next September when we start the 2013-14 season."

Konecny earned "Player of the Year" honours in the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario this past season, scoring 53 goals and adding 61 assists in only 54 games. He led the Chiefs to the Alliance championship and a 4-1 record at the OHL Cup tournament. OHL Central Scouting describes Konecny as "a very explosive skater" who plays hard on every shift. The report describes his shot as "very hard and accurate," adding that he has a quick release and a hunger for the puck.

"Our scouting staff saw Travis and all the other possible top picks many times over the course of the season, and we unanimously agreed the Konecny is the best player in the draft," said 67's Head Coach and General Manager, Chris Byrne. "His high-end skills are obvious from the point totals that he recorded, but Travis also has an intense desire to win and a fierce work-ethic which rubs-off on his teammates and makes everybody better. That's the type of player you need when you're goal is to win championships, and that's our goal here in Ottawa."

16 year-old Konecny is a right-hand shot who stands 5'10" and weighs 165 pounds. Central Scouting reports he "hits like a tank and catches a lot of players by surprise because most players don't expect a player of his stature to hit that hard."

Konecny and other 67's draft picks and invitees will attend a two-day mini-camp later this month at the 67's training facility in the Fred Barrett Arena, Leitrim Road. The camp will include fitness testing, on-ice practices and scrimmages, April 13 and 14.
