(Ottawa,ON.): The Ottawa 67's today announced the winners of their annual Welch LLP Academic Awards and the 2012 Brian Kilrea Award for community service. There are three Welch LLP Academic awards: The Roger Neilson Award, which goes to a university or college student player; the Ivan Tennant Award for academic achievement at the high school level, and the Bobby Smith Award, which goes to the player who best combines excellence in hockey and academics.
This season's winner of the Roger Nielson award is Daniel Broussard. Daniel attended Guelph University. The winner of the Ivan Tennant award is Michael Nishi. Michael attends Hillcrest High School. This year's Bobby Smith Award winner is Sean Monahan, who also attends Hillcrest H.S.
"It's a challenge for any teenager to excel scholastically, and much more so for elite athletes with intense practice and travel schedules," said Welch LLP Partner Garth Steele. "Welch LLP is delighted to be associated with a program that recognizes academic achievement by 67's players and we salute this year's winners."
This season's Brian Kilrea award was earned by three players: Shane Campbell, Nick Foglia and Shane Prince. The trio were mainstays on the 67's anti-bullying school visit program, and served as team ambassadors at many other functions over the course of the season.
The Welch LLP Academic Awards and the Kilrea award were presented to the players today by Welch LLP partner Garth Steele and 67's academic advisors Mary Kelso, Mary Enns, Theresa Kelly and Eileen Duffin. CTV Ottawa Community Ambassador Max Keeping presented the Brian Kilrea award.
