Guelph Storm News Release

Your hometown Storm finished off their regular season in winning fashion to clinch a playoff spot for the 20th consecutive year. The Erie Otters came to the Sleeman Centre for the two teams final meeting of the 2011-2012 year. Tanner Richard returned to the Storm line up and proved to be a key element scoring two goals in the Storm victory. Guelph got on the board early with a goal from Menard at 2:49 of the first frame. Erie answered back twice in the first, taking a 2-1 lead to the dressing room. About midway through the second period Erie posted another goal. Late in the period Tanner Richard brought the home side within a goal. The third period was all Storm on the scoreboard with goals from Mitchell, Menard and Richard. The Storm were 1/4 on the powerplay, while Erie went 0/4 with the man advantage.

The Owen Sound Attack took to the ice at the Sleeman Centre Friday night for the first of a home-and-home series between the two clubs. After a scoreless first period, Zack Mitchell got the Storm on the board midway through the second. Scott Kosmachuk scored shortly after, followed by a quick goal by Hunter Garlent. Guelph took a commanding 3 goal lead to the dressing room to start the third period. Garlent added one more goal, on the powerplay. The home side kept the attack off the board and Garret Sparks earned the shutout. With this win, the Storm clinched a playoff spot in front of an excited home crowd.

Looking for redemption on Saturday night, the Attack hosted the Storm for the final time this regular season. Even though the pressure of making the playoffs had been relieved from the Storm, they didn't hold anything back. Jason Dickinson notched his 13th of the season at 8:49 of the first period, on the powerplay. Justin Auger scored at 15:01 of the second frame and gave the visitors a 2-0 lead. However Owen Sound answered back and ignited the Attack crowd with a goal from Keevin Cutting at 16:18. Zack Mitchell tapped home his 37th of the season, unassisted at 15:01 of the third period and the Storm finished their regular season with a win on the road.

The winner will be announced at the Storm game on March 29th.

Champions for Education School Visits:

Throughout the season, Storm players like to visit local elementary schools to present the Champions for Education program. They present the Fun Fit program which focuses on healthy active living, and why it is important as an athlete and a student. Players also present the Read to Succeed program to primary students and reinforce the concept of literacy, school, community, respect, excellence and anti-bullying.

Champions for Education visits have wrapped up for the 2011-2012 season!

Thank you to all the schools who invited the Storm to present the Fun Fit and Read to Succeed programs to your students!
